Events and demonstrations planned across Brazil on Independence Day Sept. 7. Heightened security, disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Events are planned across Brazil to celebrate the 201st anniversary of the country's independence on Sept. 7. In Brasilia, heightened security will be implemented for a parade that is scheduled to take place from 09:00 around the Esplanada dos Ministerios and Praca dos Tres Poderes area. Parades and commemorative events are likely to be organized by local authorities across the country. Large Independence Day celebrations will likely take place along Sao Paulo's Avenida Paulista and in central areas of large cities and state capitals.

Multiple demonstrations are also planned for Sept. 7. The "Cry of the Excluded" (Grito dos Excluidos) movement will organize demonstrations nationwide to demand better access to food and water for poorer communities. Dozens of demonstrations are planned nationwide; the following events are confirmed:

  • Salvador: Campo Grande area from 08:30

  • Recife: Parque 13 de Maio from 09:00

  • Belo Horizonte: Praca Vaz de Melo from 10:00

While most groups that typically organize anti-government protests have not called for major demonstrations on Sept. 7, these are also possible.

Increased security is likely nationwide. Authorities will almost certainly heighten security measures for events and demonstrations. Transport disruptions are likely in the vicinity of Independence Day events due to checkpoints, road closures, and other security precautions. While gatherings are likely to remain peaceful, clashes between opposing groups or between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all major gatherings as a standard security precaution. If violence breaks out, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a safe, nongovernmental building. Allow extra time for travel near Independence Day celebration sites and in downtown areas of major cities.
