Emergency personnel are responding to an explosion that occurred at a chemical plant on Calle Norte 59 in the Azcapotzalco borough on the northern outskirts of Mexico City Sept. 21. Preliminary reports indicated at least 20 persons were injured in the incident; there have been no reports of fatalities. At least three of the injured individuals were treated for cyanide powder poisoning. Despite reports of a chemical leak, authorities have as yet issued no warnings concerning any health hazard to the general public beyond the plant itself.

Heavy security and localized transport disruptions will likely persist in the area over the upcoming hours.
