Protesting teachers blocking several roads, including Pan-American Highway in Chiapas, Mexico, as of Sept. 18. Transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Indigenous teachers from the municipality of Ixhuatan are protesting and blocking several roads, including the Pan-American Highway, in Chiapas State as of the morning of Sept. 18. The purpose of the action is to demand several concessions, including the cancelation of planned remote secondary schools and the dismissal of the Director of Educational Planning. Roadblocks have also been reported on the following roads:

  • Tuxtla-Chiapa de Corzo highway at the Belisario Bridge,

  • San Cristobal-Rancho Nuevo Highway at the San Pablo intersection,

  • Comiltan-La Trinitaria Highway at the Lagos de Montebello Intersection,

  • Oxchuc near the arch.

Transport disruptions are almost certain over the coming hours. Authorities will likely deploy security forces to monitor the actions and remove roadblocks. Clashes between security forces and demonstrators cannot be ruled out, especially if police attempt to disperse demonstrators forcibly.

Advice

Consider seeking alternative routes to circumvent the impacted highways. Do not attempt to cross protester-erected roadblocks. Wait for the police to remove them before proceeding.
