Bangladesh: Garment factory workers protesting in Gazipur during the afternoon of Oct. 23

Garment factory workers are protesting in Gazipur, Bangladesh, afternoon Oct. 23. Traffic disruptions ongoing along Dhaka-Tangail Highway.

Warning

Event

Protesting garment factory workers are blocking sections of the Dhaka-Tangail Highway in the Telirchala area of Gazipur District as of the afternoon of Oct. 23. Hundreds of workers are demanding salary increases and a minimum wage. Reports indicate that authorities and employers are negotiating with the workers, but the outcome remains unclear.

Significant localized traffic disruptions are ongoing, especially along the Dhaka-Tangail Highway. Ground shipping delays are possible to and from Dhaka. Security forces have deployed to monitor the gatherings as a precaution. Although violence is unlikely, clashes are also possible if police attempt to forcibly disperse crowds or protesters engage in arson and vandalism.

Gazipur is located approximately 18 km (11 miles) northwest of Dhaka.

Advice

Avoid the affected area due to heightened security, likely traffic congestion, and possible violence. Confirm deliveries and transport reservations through at least Oct. 23; re-route time-sensitive consignments if necessary. Allow additional travel time to reach nearby destinations; do not navigate any roadblock as protesters could attack vehicles. If operating in the area, exercise caution and seek shelter in a secure building if an unruly crowd forms nearby. Heed all advice of security personnel. Monitor trusted local media for updates on protests and related disruptions, as organizers may not announce them in advance.
