Brazil: Major unrest reported in Rio de Janeiro following Oct. 23 killing of militia leader
Unrest reported in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, following Oct. 23 police killing of militia leader; vandalism, transport disruptions reported.
Event
Significant unrest has broken out in Rio de Janeiro following the Oct. 23 police killing of Matheus da Silva Rezende (alias Faustao), who was one of the top leaders of Milicia do CL, the city's largest illegal militia. Authorities reported that criminals had set at least 21 public buses on fire as of the late afternoon; burning vehicles and tires have closed roads in several neighborhoods. Additionally, a bus reportedly blocked traffic on Avenida Brasil, a major thoroughfare in the city. Related unrest has largely been focused in the city's West Zone (Zona Oeste), with the most affected neighborhoods being Cosmos, Guaratiba, Inhoaiba, Magarca, Paciencia, and Santa Cruz.
In response to the unrest, MobiRio, the company that operates the public bus system, has suspended service on most lines. Additional violence and transport disruptions are possible throughout the city. Businesses in areas subject to unrest will likely close, and authorities will almost certainly deploy large numbers of police officers throughout the city in an effort to reestablish order.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations and gatherings of people who may be associated with Milicia do CL. If violence occurs nearby, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Consider avoiding the public transportation system, especially public buses, until police reestablish order. Allow for additional transport time throughout Rio de Janeiro. Reconfirm business appointments. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
