Activists to protest across Turkiye Oct. 19-20 to express solidarity with Palestine and denounce Israel. Clashes possible.

Warning

Event

A number of activist groups plan to hold protests across Turkiye Oct. 19-20 to express solidarity with Palestine and denounce Israel. The demonstrations were announced after Gaza-based health authorities claimed that a strike that reportedly killed hundreds of people was carried out by Israeli forces; for their part, Israeli officials claimed that the blast was the result of a misfired rocket launched by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) militant group.

Demonstrations are planned on the following dates and times:

Oct. 19

  • Adana: Adana New Courthouse 14:00

  • Diyarbakir: Ceylan Karavil Shopping Mall 20:00

  • Istanbul: Istanbul Justice Palace 11:00

Oct. 20

  • Ankara: Protest march from Armada Shopping and Business Center to Israeli Embassy from 18:30.

  • Afyonkarahisar: Protest march from Gedik Ahmet Pasha Imaret Mosque to Memorial Park (Anit Park) following Friday Prayer (likely starting time between 13:15-14:00)

  • Diyarbakir: Ceylan Karavil Mall 20:00

  • Istanbul: Beyazid II Mosque at the conclusion of Friday Prayer (likely starting time between 13:15-14:00)

  • Rize: Seyh Mosque 13:00

Additional demonstrations are likely in large urban centers and possibly in other locations.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near all demonstration areas, as well as near any Israeli consulates. Clashes between demonstrators and law-enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.

Context

Protests have taken place across Turkiye since the start of the Israel-Hamas war; however, protests intensified following allegations that Israeli forces bombed a hospital in the Gaza Strip Oct. 17. Demonstrators subsequently stormed the Israeli Consulate in Istanbul and attempted to storm an American military base near Malatya the night of Oct. 17-18.

Advice

Avoid all affected areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near any demonstration areas. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
