Authorities have confirmed that an earlier explosion near the Ministry of Interior building in the Kixilay area of Ankara Oct. 1 was caused by a suicide bomb. According to reports, two attackers arrived in a vehicle at around 09:30; one attacker reportedly detonated an explosive device, lightly wounding two police officers, while police neutralized the second attacker. There have been no claims of responsibility for the attack.

Authorities have cordoned off the impacted area and a considerably heightened security personnel presence is likely over the coming hours. Associated localized transport and business disruptions are likely.

Context

The Kizilay area is home to several government ministries and the parliament, which was due to re-open later Oct. 1 with an address from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
