Political groups to continue transport blockade in Bangladesh Nov. 8-9. Increased security, transit disruptions likely; violence possible.
Several political organizations, including the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), will continue a nationwide transport blockade campaign Nov. 8-9 to denounce recent deaths and arrests of party leaders and supporters during protests. Similar demonstrations took place Oct. 31-Nov. 2 and are ongoing Nov. 6. However, organizers will not conduct any action Nov. 7 in light of National Revolution and Solidarity Day. Incidents of arson targeting buses were reported Nov. 4-5 in Banglamator, Bhola, Demra, Dhaka, Gazipur, Mirpur, Narayanganj, and Shyampur, leading to clashes between police and demonstrators.
The transport blockades will almost certainly cause significant disruptions to various passenger and freight transport services across Bangladesh, especially in Chattogram and Dhaka. Authorities will probably limit inter-city vehicular movement between major urban centers during the action. Shipping disruptions are likely. BNP activists will likely block major roadways, rail tracks, and ferry docks. Violence, including further acts of arson and vandalism, is possible. BNP members may clash with activists from opposing groups, such as transport unions affiliated with the ruling Awami League (AL). Some local businesses may close due to the non-availability of transport for workers.
The BNP could hold other demonstrations, including sit-in protests and shutdown strikes (hartal), across Bangladesh over the coming days. Rival political groups, including the AL, may organize counterdemonstrations. Potential gathering sites include political party offices, police stations, prominent government buildings, public squares, sports grounds, mosques, press clubs, transport hubs, and major thoroughfares. Participation will vary by location and sponsoring group, with larger gatherings potentially drawing tens of thousands of participants. Organizers could cancel or delay any planned actions at short notice due to organizational issues and/or law enforcement-related restrictions.
Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security posture around all gatherings and may use force, including live ammunition and tear gas, to disperse and arrest unruly participants.
