Ireland: Increased security presence continues in Dublin as of early Nov. 24 following unrest /update 2
Increased security presence continues in Dublin, Ireland, as of early Nov. 24 following unrest. Disruptions likely.
Authorities continue to maintain an increased security presence in Dublin as of early Nov. 24 after protests denouncing an earlier stabbing incident that injured five people on Parnell Square turned violent late Nov. 23. About 400 police personnel continue to patrol the city center, although protesters have largely dispersed; authorities have also made an unspecified number of arrests.
At the height of the unrest, protesters clashed with police, set fire to police vehicles and public transport, and looted stores. Demonstrators also reportedly set fire to a Holiday Inn Express at the intersection of O'Connell Street and Cathal Brugha Street. Authorities have implemented road closures; tram and bus services in the city have been suspended. Officials have advised the public to check for updates with their transport operator before beginning their journey Nov. 24
Increased security, as well as localized transport and business disruptions, are likely to continue over the coming hours.
Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. Check for disruptions and allow extra time to reach destinations in central Dublin. Heed instructions from local authorities.
