Sierra Leone: Authorities amend nationwide curfew as of Nov. 27 following assaults in Freetown /update 2

Authorities amend nationwide curfew in Sierra Leone to 21:00-06:00 following armed assaults in Freetown; increased security likely.

Warning

As of Nov. 27 authorities have amended curfew hours to 21:00-06:00 nationwide following recent armed assaults in Freetown; increased security remains likely through at least the remainder of November. Early Nov. 26, unidentified assailants targeted the Wilberforce military barracks, in addition to overrunning several detention facilities, including the Pademba Road Prison, abducting certain inmates while freeing an unspecified number of others. Gunfire exchanges also reportedly occurred near another military installation in Murray Town. As of early Nov. 27, officials have announced that the attack has ended, instigators arrested, and that calm has been restored. The investigation over the motive behind the attacks is still ongoing; no group has yet claimed responsibility for the incidents.

Authorities continue to advise residents to remain indoors as a precaution. Although officials have given no indication as to how long the curfew will stay in force, the measure will not be fully lifted until the attackers and escaped prisoners are apprehended. Additionally, the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA) has indicated that travelers flying via Freetown International Airport (FNA) will be impacted due to the ongoing curfew and has urged airline operators to reschedule departing passengers on the next available flights after the curfew is lifted; the country's airspace remains open.

Security-related disruptions to business operations, as well as to ground and air transport, are likely until government forces complete their investigations and search efforts. Authorities may order the use of additional restrictions depending on the severity of the perceived threat. Further similar security incidents cannot be ruled out.

Exercise increased caution if operating in Sierra Leone. Avoid government buildings, security installations, and large concentrations of police and soldiers. Strictly heed the instructions of local authorities, including any official transport and security advisories. Maintain contact with diplomatic missions.
