Sierra Leone likely to maintain increased security through at least late November following armed assaults in Freetown.
Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security posture across Sierra Leone through at least late November following recent armed assaults in Freetown. Early Nov. 26, unidentified assailants targeted the Wilberforce military barracks, in addition to overrunning several detention facilities, including the Pademba Road Prison, abducting certain inmates while freeing an unspecified number of others. Gunfire exchanges also reportedly occurred near another military installation in Murray Town. As of late Nov. 26, the exact motive behind the attacks remains unclear; no group has yet claimed responsibility for the incidents. Officials have launched an operation to apprehend the perpetrators and recapture the escaped prison inmates.
According to government sources, security forces have repelled the attackers and order has been restored at the targeted facilities; however, some fighting reportedly continues on the outskirts of Freetown. A nationwide curfew remains in effect as of late Nov. 26; authorities continue to advise residents to remain indoors as a precaution. Although officials have given no indication as to how long the curfew will stay in force, the measure will not be fully lifted until the attackers and escaped prisoners are apprehended. Additionally, the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA) has indicated that travelers flying via Freetown International Airport (FNA) on Nov. 26 will be impacted due to the ongoing curfew and has urged airline operators to reschedule departing passengers on the next available flights after the curfew is lifted; the country's airspace remains open.
Security-related disruptions to business operations, as well as ground and air transport, are likely until government forces complete their investigations and search efforts. Authorities may order the use of additional restrictions depending on the severity of the perceived threat. Further similar security incidents cannot be ruled out.
