Brazil: Police carry out security operation in Rio de Janeiro's Complexo da Mare area Dec. 26

Authorities are carrying out a security operation in Complexo da Mare, an area located in northern Rio de Janeiro, Dec. 26. Reports indicate the anti-gang operation, carried out by the Special Police Operations Battalion (BOPE) and the Dog Action Battalion (BAC) began in the early hours and focused on the Nova Holanda and Parque Uniao areas in Complexo da Mare. Based on past precedent, authorities may have closed the Red Line Expressway (Linha Vermelha) during the operation.

Heightened security and disruptions to business and traffic are likely in the affected area through at least late Dec. 26. Transport disruptions along the Red Line Expressway (Linha Vermelha), which leads to Rio de Janeiro/Galeao - Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport (GIG), are possible.
