Greece: Authorities to implement enhanced security measures in Athens during diplomatic visit Dec. 7

Authorities to enforce tight security in Athens, Greece, Dec. 7 during visit by Turkish President Erdogan. Road closures scheduled.

Authorities plan to enforce enhanced security measures in Athens Dec. 7 during Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's official visit to the city. Traffic restrictions, including road closures and parking bans, will occur in several locations throughout the city and on roads connecting the city with Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH) during the day. Additionally, authorities are implementing a ban on public gatherings in central Athens 06:00-18:00. Impacted roadways in the city center include the following routes:

  • Academy (Akadimias)

  • Alexandras Avenue

  • Katechaki Avenue

  • Kifisias Avenue

  • Mediterranean (Mesogeion) Avenue

  • Michalakopoulou Avenue

  • University (Panepistimiou)

  • Stadium (Stadiou)

  • Vasilisis Amalias Avenue

  • Vasileos Konstantinou Avenue

  • Vasilissis Sofias Avenue

Additionally, areas within a 100-meter (109-yard) radius of the following locations may be closed throughout the day:

  • ATH

  • Athens Road (Attiki Odos)

  • Katechaki Avenue (between Regional Ymittou and Kokkinopoulou Street)

  • Panagioti Kanellopoulou Avenue

  • Regional Ymittou (Periferiaki Imittou) (A64/Y7)

Transport disruptions are likely to persist in affected areas through the evening. Road closures may occur on short notice in any of the aforementioned areas. Transport disruptions are also likely outside of areas explicitly mentioned by authorities. Air travel disruptions cannot be ruled out at ATH. Small-scale protests may materialize despite the public demonstration ban and are likely to be met with heavy security.

Allow additional time if traveling in central Athens or near ATH. Allow additional time for all travel via ATH. Strictly heed all instructions from authorities. Avoid any demonstrations that materialize as a standard precaution.
