Bangladesh: Increased security, related disruptions highly likely during annual Bishwa Ijtema religious gathering in Tongi through Feb. 11
Bangladesh to host annual Bishwa Ijtema religious event in Tongi Feb. 2-4 and 9-11. Tight security, disruptions likely through Feb. 11.
Increased security and associated business and travel disruptions are likely as Bangladesh hosts the annual Bishwa Ijtema (World Gathering) religious event. The gathering will take place in Tongi, Gazipur District, in two phases - one running Feb. 2-4 with the second running Feb. 9-11. Millions of participants typically assemble along the banks of the Turag River during the event. Several official events, including religious festivals, will probably occur in Gazipur District and nearby areas in Dhaka through Feb. 11.
The government will deploy 7,500 security personnel at the primary gathering venue and will almost certainly maintain a heightened posture near government buildings, crowded marketplaces, major transport hubs, and routes leading toward official event sites. The Ijtema has previously led to major traffic disruptions in Dhaka, mainly in the Kakoli, Khilkhet, Mohakhali, Nikunja, Tongi, and Uttara areas, as well as along Progati Sarani Road. Increased congestion is likely at transport hubs, such as Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC) and railway stations in Dhaka and Tongi. Minor flight disruptions may occur at DAC through Feb. 11 due to the airport's close proximity to the main religious gathering site. Local businesses may close during scheduled event days. Lingering disruptions are possible as participants depart Tongi on Feb. 11. Isolated clashes between police and participants cannot be ruled out.
Nonparticipants should avoid the event site on the banks of the Turag River as a standard security precaution. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Confirm business appointments, road status, and transport reservations through Feb. 11. Exercise caution while driving and allow additional time to reach destinations near the impacted areas. Carry proper identification documents to present at security checks. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
