Bangladesh: Ongoing gas supply disruptions likely to persist nationwide through at least late January

Ongoing gas disruptions are likely to persist across Bangladesh through at least late January due to several factors, including a severe shortage in piped energy supply and increased demand exceeding the country's energy production capacity. Impacted areas include several parts of Dhaka, such as Jatrabari, Kazipara, Mohammadpur, Rayerbazar, and Shahjahanpur. Other urban centers, including Narayanganj, are also reportedly experiencing similar outages or reduced pressure.

As of Jan. 17, the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) had announced a proposal to raise gas prices. If gas prices increase, related protests could occur nationwide. Potential gathering sites include utility providers' offices, as well as prominent government buildings, press clubs, public squares, and thoroughfares. Well-attended gatherings could draw thousands of participants.

Authorities will likely monitor any such gatherings that materialize and may move to disperse overly disruptive crowds, including with baton charges and tear gas. Clashes between police and activists cannot be ruled out. Activists could march along or block roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions. Associated commercial disruptions are possible.
