Bangladesh: Opposing political rallies to occur in Dhaka Jan. 27
Awami League to hold rally at party office in Dhaka, Bangladesh, 15:00 Jan. 27; BNP to allegedly hold march from party office at 14:00.
Opposing political rallies will occur in Dhaka on Jan. 27. The ruling Awami League (AL) will hold a rally at its political party office along Bangabandhu Avenue starting at 15:00. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will also reportedly hold a protest march from its political party office in Dhaka's Naya Paltan area beginning at 14:00 as a part of its ongoing nationwide protests. Additional gatherings are possible on Jan. 27. Potential gathering venues include prominent government buildings, public squares, sports stadiums, mosques, press clubs, and thoroughfares. Well-attended gatherings could draw hundreds of thousands of participants.
Authorities will almost certainly monitor the gatherings and may use force, including baton charges and tear gas, to disperse overly unruly crowds. Officials may implement enhanced security restrictions, including road closures, depending on the severity of the perceived threat. Clashes between police and activists, as well as between members of opposing rival political camps, cannot be ruled out. Associated localized transport and business disruptions are highly likely.
Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Confirm all business appointments and transport reservations in advance. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
