Bangladesh: Political parties likely to continue demonstrating nationwide through at least early February following recent general elections /update 19

Post-election demonstrations likely to persist across Bangladesh through at least early February. Violence likely.

Warning

A series of demonstrations that has been occurring nationwide in the wake of Bangladesh's Jan. 7 general election will likely persist through at least early February. As of Jan. 29, the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will stage a nationwide protest march campaign on Jan. 30 to denounce several issues, including rising commodity prices. The ruling Awami (League) party will also hold rallies across the country to mobilize grassroots-level support. The AL, BNP, and other political parties will likely organize additional demonstrations of varying types over the coming weeks. Opposition parties are forwarding several demands and denouncing alleged irregularities in the electoral process. Counterdemonstrations may materialize at short notice during gatherings planned by any political organization.

Potential gathering sites include prominent government buildings, including police stations and election commission offices, as well as public squares, political party offices, sports fields, mosques, press clubs, and major thoroughfares. While participation will probably vary by locale and sponsoring political groups, some previous events in major cities such as Chittagong and Dhaka have attracted hundreds of thousands of participants. Organizers may delay or cancel any planned action with little to no notice for any number of reasons, including law enforcement-related restrictions.

Officials will almost certainly monitor any such gatherings that materialize. Authorities may conduct mass arrests or resort to using force, including baton charges and tear gas, in response to security incidents. Security personnel may implement enhanced restrictions, including temporary curbs on public movement and/or telecommunication, depending on the severity of the perceived threats. Clashes between police and activists, as well as among members of rival political camps, cannot be ruled out. Isolated security incidents, including small-scale explosions, are possible. Localized transport and business disruptions are highly likely.

Exercise increased caution through at least early February if operating in Bangladesh. Avoid all demonstrations due to the potential for violence. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time to reach destinations near gathering sites. Plan accordingly for potential business disruptions. Maintain contact with your diplomatic mission. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
