Brazilian authorities are investigating the death of a US national in Rio de Janeiro as of Jan. 16. The victim was reportedly found at around 23:05 on Jan. 15 with several stab wounds in an apartment on Rua Abreu Fialho, 15, in Jardim Botanico neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro's South Zone. Officials have not confirmed any arrests, and the motive for the attack remains unclear at this time.
Crime overall remains high in Brazil. The incident does not indicate a broader increase in the threat of crime to foreign nationals in the country. However, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, a popular tourist destination, homicide rates have risen in 2023 in comparison to 2022.
