Major security operation underway in Guayaquil, Ecuador, Jan. 9 after criminals take hostages at a local television station. Avoid the area.

Critical

A major security operation is underway as of the afternoon of Jan. 9 following a hostage situation at the TC Television studios located at the intersection of Avenida de las Americas and Calle Joaquin Jose Oreantia Gonzalez in Guayaquil. The site is adjacent to the Jose Joaquin de Olmedo International Airport (GYE) and the Simon Bolivar Convention Center. A group of criminals entered the studios, held employees at gunpoint, and displayed explosive devices. Police said that gunmen stormed the TC television station earlier in the afternoon; thirteen individuals were apprehended in connection to the incident. However, it's unclear if all the gunmen have been detained. Authorities have cordoned off the area and evacuated nearby establishments.

A heavy police and military presence is likely throughout the area through Jan. 9. Authorities have closed Avenida de las Americas, and significant disruptions to transport are likely, including travel to and from GYE and the Convention Center. Many businesses in Guayaquil have closed in response to the situation, and continued business disruptions are likely. Armed clashes between criminals and security forces are possible.

Avoid the area. Seek routes that bypass Avenida de las Americas. Allow for additional transport time throughout Guayaquil. Reconfirm business appointments and flights. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
