Greece: Education workers to demonstrate in Athens and Thessaloniki Feb. 2

Unionized educators to protest in central Athens and Thessaloniki, Greece, Feb. 2. Heightened security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Unionized educators plan to protest in central Athens and Thessaloniki Feb. 2. The purpose of the demonstrations is to denounce the alleged targeted disciplinary actions against unionized teachers. Participants will gather at Syntagma Square in Athens from 13:30 and at the Ministry of Macedonia and Thrace building on Proxenon in Thessaloniki from 14:30. It is unclear how many participants may attend.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the protest sites. Low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the affected areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near Syntagma Square, Athens, or the Ministry of Macedonia and Thrace, Thessaloniki. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
