Greece: Teacher and student organizations to protest in several cities Jan. 25 /update 1
Teacher and student organizations to protest across Greece, Jan. 25. Heightened security, transport disruptions likely.
Student and teacher organizations plan to protest in several Greek cities on Jan. 25 to denounce proposed legislation that would facilitate the establishment of private universities and trade schools. Organizers have announced specific plans for demonstrations at the following locations and times:
Athens: Propylaea from 12:00
Patras: Georgiou I Square from 11:30
Thessaloniki: Arch of Galerius (Kamara) from 12:00
The planned gatherings are the latest in a series of protests that began in December. Similar rallies of varying sizes are also possible in cities elsewhere around the country. It remains unclear how many participants the demonstrations may draw; however, a related Jan. 11 protest in Athens reportedly had 800 attendees and ended in clashes with police.
Heightened security and transport disruptions are likely near all demonstration sites.
Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near demonstration sites. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
