Thailand: Activists to stage indefinite sit-in protest at Government House in Bangkok from Feb. 2

Activists to protest at Government House in Bangkok, Thailand, from Feb. 2. Tight security, transport disruptions likely; scuffles possible.

Informational

Activists from the Students and People’s Network for Thailand Reform (STR) plan to stage an indefinite sit-in protest at the Government House in Bangkok from Feb. 2. Participants may also gather at the nearby Chamai Maruchet Bridge. The action is part of a series of demonstrations to denounce the alleged preferential treatment of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra after he was allowed to extend his stay in the police hospital instead of returning to jail. Dozens to a few hundred people could attend the gathering. Organizers may call off the plans at short notice due to legal restrictions or police actions; previous sit-in activity lasted three days.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely around the protest site. Isolated scuffles are possible if police attempt to disperse the gathering forcibly.

Avoid the demonstration as a precaution and to minimize travel delays. Allow additional travel time near the gathering site. Heed all official transport and security advisories. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
