Workers are protesting and blocking the H1 Yerevan-Martuni highway near Gegharkunik Feb. 21; participants are demanding a decrease in income tax for emigrant workers from Armenia working in Russia. Several hundred people are participating. Armenian authorities are deploying to the protest area.
Road travel disruptions through the H1 highway are ongoing. Authorities will likely deploy additional law enforcement officers to monitor the gathering and clear the area. Significant violence is not anticipated.
Avoid the affected area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling through the H1 highway between Yerevan and Martuni on Feb. 21. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
