Investigations ongoing after Dutch national killed in Sao Paulo, Brazil, as of early Feb. 2.

Informational

Brazilian authorities are investigating the death of a Dutch national in Sao Paulo as of Feb. 2. The individual was a business traveler who was the victim of an attempted robbery in central Sao Paulo. The incident occurred in mid-January and took place during business hours on Rua 25 de Marco, a popular shopping zone in the city center, leaving the victim with severe head injuries. After spending weeks in hospital, officials have confirmed that the victim died on Jan. 27. Authorities have not confirmed any arrests at this time.

Crime overall remains high in Brazil. The incident does not indicate a broader increase in the threat of crime to foreign nationals in the country. While the homicide rates in Sao Paulo were historically low in 2023, robbery is increasingly common in central areas of the city and criminals can often resort to violence.
