Brazil: Unionized bus workers start indefinite strike in Sao Luis Feb. 6

Unionized bus workers begin indefinite strike in Sao Luis, Maranhao State, Brazil, Feb. 6. Disruptions likely.

Warning

Bus workers affiliated with the Sindicato dos Trabalhadores em Transportes Rodoviarios no Estado do Maranhao (STTREMA) in the Sao Luis Metropolitan Area, Maranhao State, began an indefinite strike on Feb. 6 to demand better working conditions and a salary increase. All public bus services are fully suspended. While authorities determined that bus services must operate at 50 percent capacity during the strike action, it remains possible that striking workers decide to fully suspend bus services.

Related protests are possible, though none have been confirmed as yet. In addition to the direct impact on public transport in Sao Luis, the walkout is likely to result in increased traffic congestion and demand for taxis, app-based ride-sharing, and metro services.

Reconfirm public transportation schedules if operating in the Sao Luis Metropolitan Area Feb. 6. Allow extra time to reach destinations. Avoid any possible protests.
