Germany: Anti-right-wing demonstrations to continue in cities nationwide through at least late February /update 6

Civil society groups to continue protests across Germany through late February. Increased security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Civil society groups plan to continue their ongoing campaign of demonstrations in cities across Germany through at least late February. The purpose of the action is to denounce what activists perceive as an increase in right-wing extremism and, in particular, certain anti-migrant statements by members of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Related protests have drawn large crowds in Germany’s principal cities, including Berlin, Munich, Bremen, Cologne, Dresden, Kiel, Stuttgart, Hamburg and Frankfurt. Organizers have announced plans for over a dozen additional protests at various locations through the end of the month, including:

Feb. 23

  • Pforzheim: March from the stele on Bahnhofstrasse to Market Square starting at 17:00

  • Rudolstadt: Gathering at town market, 16:00-18:00

  • Themar: Rally at Schuetzenhaus starting at 17:30

Feb. 24

  • Herzberg: Rally at Market Square starting at 15:00

  • Langenhagen: Rally at the square in front of the Cine-MotionKino movie theater at Walsroder Strasse 105 starting at 13:00

  • Marl: Rally along Graewenkolkstrasse starting at 10:00

  • Siegen: Rally at Scheinerplatz starting at 16:00

  • Stuttgart: Rally at Market Square starting at 14:30

Feb. 25

  • Bad Zwischenahn: Rally at town hall starting at 15:00

  • Kiel: Rally at the Exer Car Park starting at 16:00

  • Luckau: Rally at Market Square starting at 14:00

  • Oldenburg: Rally at Schlossplatz (Castle Square) starting at 15:00

  • Selb: Rally at Martin-Luther-Platz in front of St. Andreas Church starting at 14:30

  • Varel: Rally at Schlossplatz (Castle Square) starting at 14:00

Participation in the listed protests will likely vary significantly by location. Related demonstrations are likely in cities elsewhere across Germany through the end of February, with the largest gatherings probably occurring in major cities on weekends or after business hours on weekdays.

Heightened security is likely near all demonstrations. Road closures will likely prompt localized traffic disruptions. Counterprotests are possible, and scuffles between demonstrators and police or between supporters of rival political camps cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the demonstration areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near a protest or on major roadways into affected cities. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
