Authorities plan to defuse a WWII-era bomb in the Schmargendorf neighborhood on Berlin's southwestern side early Feb. 21. The device is located at a construction site at Mecklenburische Strasse 32. Police will cordon off and evacuate a 500-meter (550-yard) radius around the bomb's location. The operation will likely affect traffic along the nearby A-100. Authorities report that about 7,500 people reside within the evacuation zone. Police have instructed local residents to leave the evacuation area no later than 09:00 Feb. 21. It remains unclear how long the disposal operation will take.

Road closures will occur in the vicinity during the operation, resulting in localized transport disruptions. Changes to public transport schedules are likely. Heightened security is almost certain until the end of the operation.
