Warning

Authorities plan to defuse a WWII-era bomb in central Essen the afternoon of Feb. 21. The device is located at a construction site at Hollestrasse, near Essen's central railway station. Police will cordon off and evacuate a 250-meter (273-yard) radius around the bomb's location. The disposal operation will affect railway, tram, and subway traffic in Essen, and affect traffic along the nearby A-40. Authorities report that about 350 residents within the evacuation zone will be affected. It remains unclear how long the disposal operation will take.

Road closures will occur in the vicinity during the operation, resulting in localized transport disruptions. Changes to public transport schedules are likely. Heightened security is almost certain until the end of the operation.

Avoid the affected area on Feb. 21 until authorities give the all-clear. Check for transport disruptions before beginning journeys and allow extra time for travel. Heed instructions from local security personnel.
