Greece: Demonstrations possible in Athens Feb. 3 despite police ban on gatherings in center of capital

Rival activists may rally at Rigillis Square in Athens, Greece, Feb. 3 despite police ban. Heightened security likely; clashes possible.

Warning

Members of opposing activist groups may attempt to demonstrate at Rigillis Square in Athens on the evening of Feb. 3 despite an official police ban on gatherings in the center of the capital. Activists affiliated with the Golden Dawn organization have planned to rally at Rigillis Square from 19:00; in response, opposing groups have called for a counterdemonstration at the same site from 17:00.

Heightened security is likely in central Athens Feb. 3 and into the morning of Feb. 4 as police enforce the public gathering ban. Localized transport disruptions and clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement officers or counterdemonstrators cannot be ruled out if activists attempt to demonstrate in violation of the gathering ban.

Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur. Allow additional time if traveling in central Athens in the late afternoon or evening of Feb. 3. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.

Local police have announced a ban on outdoor gatherings in central Athens 06:00 Feb. 3-06:00 Feb. 4 out of concern that the planned demonstrations could pose significant risks to public safety.
