Greece: Education activists to continue demonstrates in Athens, Feb. 12 and 15
Education activists to continue campaign of demonstrations in Athens, Greece, Feb. 12 and 15. Heightened security, likely clashes.
Education activists and unionized educators plan to continue a campaign of demonstrations in Athens in coming days. Activist groups plan to gather at the Ministry of Education at 12:00 on Feb. 12. Campaigners plan a further rally Feb. 15, at a location to be confirmed. Groups will denounce the government's plan to establish private universities. Short-notice education strikes are likely; secondary protests and further demonstrations nationwide are possible.
Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are highly likely near the protest sites. Clashes between rival groups and with the police are likely. Vandalism and attempted unlawful access into government buildings are likely.
Avoid the affected areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling in Athens. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur. Reconfirm appointments, particularly with education sector interests.
On Feb. 8, around 15,000 student protesters gathered in Propylaia, Athens. In secondary incidents, including at the Prime Minister's residence, clashes broke out between factions, police intervened to disperse crowds, and several people were injured.
