Greece: Education activists to demonstrate in central Athens and strike nationwide, Feb. 8

Education activists to demonstrate at Propylaea in Athens, Greece, from 12:00 Feb. 8. Associated nationwide strike also planned.

Warning

Education activists and unionized educators plan to protest at the Propylaea in central Athens from 12:00 on Feb. 8 to denounce the government's plan to establish private universities. Additionally, officials with the Confederation of Greek Civil Servants Trade Unions (ADEDY) have called a nationwide strike from 11:00 until the end of the work day to allow civil servants and teachers to participate in the demonstration.

The associated strike may disrupt civil services nationwide, such as public schools. Although organizers did not announce additional protest locations, activists may gather in other prominent areas around the country, including public squares, government buildings, and major thoroughfares.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the protest sites. Low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the affected areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near Propylaea in Athens. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur. Reconfirm appointments, particularly with education sector interests.
