Greece: Unionized workers of various sectors plan to strike nationwide Feb. 27-28 /update 2

Worker's unions for several sectors to strike in Greece Feb. 27-28; business, travel disruptions and increased security likely.

Warning

Unionized workers from multiple sectors plan to strike across Greece Feb. 27-28 to demand several concessions, including increased salaries. The industrial action will begin in Athens with a 48-hour taxi drivers' strike starting Feb. 27. On Feb. 28, unionized workers will stage walkouts impacting aviation, transport, health, hospitality, public administration, construction, and telecommunications sectors. Air traffic controllers affiliated with ADEDY will hold a 24-hour strike, impacting domestic and international flights departing to and from Greece. Flight cancelations are likely through Feb. 28; however, emergency air transport will not be affected. Striking workers could stage pickets in major urban centers near institutional buildings and transport hubs.

The strike will likely prompt transport and business disruptions nationwide for the duration of the action. Authorities will likely deploy to monitor possible demonstrations or gatherings of striking personnel. Localized disruptions near protest sites are possible. Confrontations between law enforcement officers and demonstrators could erupt. Disruptions could persist in the hours following the conclusion of the strike.

Confirm all business appointments and transportation in Greece from Feb. 27-28. Reconfirm air travel reservations on Feb. 28, and do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. Heed instructions from authorities. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of a security disturbance.
