Mexico: Roadblocks, protests scheduled throughout Oaxaca State Feb. 26, due to President Lopez Obrador's visit

Unionized teachers to build roadblocks, hold protests in Oaxaca State, Mexico, 09:00 Feb. 26, due to Presidential visit. Disruptions likely.

Unionized teachers, affiliated with Section 22 of the National Education Workers Coordinator (Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Education, CNTE), plan to build roadblocks and hold protests in multiple locations throughout the state of Oaxaca starting 09:00, Feb. 26. The purpose of the demonstrations is to demand the national government provide uniforms and other equipment for students in the state; the protest is being held during a visit by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to the Port of Salina Cruz.

Activists announced some of the roadblocks within the city of Oaxaca, including in the following locations:

  • Tunel Cinco Senores

  • Crucero Fortin Plaza

  • Baseball Stadium (along Boulevard Vasconcelos)

  • Crucero Simbolos Patrios

  • Crucero Cinco Senores

Additionally, protests are likely in other areas of the state, including Salina Cruz. Significant transport and business disruptions are likely due to the protests, which are likely to be well-attended. Heightened security is likely, especially near major roads. Clashes between protesters and police are possible.

Plan for delays and alternative routes if operating in Oaxaca Feb. 26. Do not attempt to cross a roadblock if you encounter one. Strictly heed instructions from authorities.
