Netherlands: Climate activists plan roadblock protest in Amsterdam, Feb. 24
Extinction Rebellion group plans to block the A10 motorway in Amsterdam, Netherlands, from 12:00 Feb. 24; travel disruptions likely.
The environmental group Extinction Rebellion (XR) plans a roadblock protest in Amsterdam, Feb. 24. Activists will gather at 12:00 to block the A10 motorway, adjacent to the banking group ING's former headquarters known as "De Schoen". The group will denounce ING's investments in the fossil fuel sector. Local authorities have called to ban the demonstration, however, it is likely that activists will still gather at the site. In previous events, several hundred protesters have taken part, and police have deployed water cannons to disperse the activists before making multiple arrests. Similar attendance numbers and police tactics are likely on Feb. 24.
Additional police will likely be deployed to monitor the protest and to minimize travel delays. The action will likely prompt localized transport disruptions.
Avoid any demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Check public transport schedules and local traffic conditions for disruptions before beginning journeys in Amsterdam Feb. 24. Allow extra time to reach destinations in protest-affected areas. Leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Heed instructions from authorities.
