Bangladesh: Maritime workers plan to strike nationwide from March 5

Workers from the Bangladesh Water Transport Workers Federation have called for an indefinite strike from March 5 to address issues related to workplace safety, compensation, and job security. Unless averted, the action could cause cargo handling and shipping disruptions across ports in Bangladesh. Additional extensions are possible through mid-March; organizers may call off the action if negotiations begin and/or succeed.

Strike participants may stage peaceful demonstrations near port facilities as part of the action. Authorities will likely increase security near protest venues as a precaution. Related gatherings may cause localized transport disruptions. Residual disruptions could continue beyond the initial labor action as workers clear backlogs.
