Hungary: Opposition politicians and students to hold demonstrations in central Budapest March 15

Opposition politicians and students to hold demonstrations in central Budapest, Hungary, March 15. Tight security, disruptions likely.

Warning

Opposition political leaders and student groups plan demonstrations in Budapest, March 15. As of March 12, the rallies are planned separately, but the two events may combine. Opposition leader Peter Magyar is calling for an anti-government protest from 15:00 on Andrassy Avenue. In parallel, student organizations are planning a protest calling for improved environmental policies, at Blaha Lujza. Tens of thousands gathered to protest against the government on three occasions in February; similar numbers may participate on March 15. Further protests are likely.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely in the vicinity of the demonstrations.

Avoid the affected areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling in central Budapest in the afternoon of March 15. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.

March 15 is "Revolution Day" in Hungary, that commemorates the start of the 1848 revolution.
