Mexico: Security forces disperse protesters attempting to storm National Palace in Mexico City, March 6 /update 1

Authorities disperse protestors attempting to storm the National Palace in Mexico City, Mexico, March 6. Residual disruptions likely.

Warning

Police have forcibly dispersed a group of demonstrators who had attempted to storm the National Palace (Palacio Nacional) in Mexico City on March 6. The purpose of the demonstration was to demand justice for the 43 students kidnapped in Ayotzinapa, Guerrero, in 2014. Security personnel mobilized in force and began deploying teargas when protesters used a truck to break down the building's entrance on Calle Moneda and began throwing rocks at the windows.

Although protesters have been dispersed, authorities will likely maintain a heightened security posture near the affected area over the coming hours to prevent any further disturbances. Lingering transport and business disruptions are likely as well.

Exercise caution if operating in the vicinity of the National Palace through at least the end of March 6. Strictly heed the instructions of local police. Leave the area at the first sign of any further security disturbances.
