Bangladesh: Garment factory workers protesting in Gazipur the afternoon of April 2

Garment factory workers protesting in Gazipur, Bangladesh, afternoon April 2. Traffic disruptions reported along Kashimpur Road.

Warning

Protesting garment factory workers are blocking sections of Kashimpur Road in the Jarun area, Konabari District, Gazipur City, as of the afternoon of April 2. Around 8,000 workers are protesting due to the non-payment of February salaries and Eid-ul-Fitr allowances. Reports indicate that authorities and employers are negotiating with the workers, but the outcome remains unclear. Related gatherings causing associated traffic disruptions have been ongoing since April 1.

Further gatherings of varying types, including strikes, are possible over the coming days. Potential rally sites include garment factories, government buildings, sports fields, and public squares. Roadblocks are also possible along major thoroughfares, such as Dhaka-Tangail Highway. Well-attended demonstrations will likely draw hundreds to thousands of participants.

Officials will almost certainly maintain an increased security presence near any such gatherings and could use force, including baton charges and tear gas. Authorities could also implement temporary public gathering restrictions. Clashes between police and activists are possible. Associated localized transport and business disruptions are likely.

Gazipur is located approximately 18 km (11 miles) northwest of Dhaka.

Avoid the affected area due to heightened security, likely traffic congestion, and possible violence. Allow additional travel time to reach nearby destinations; do not navigate any roadblock as protesters could attack vehicles. If operating in the area, exercise caution and seek shelter in a secure building if an unruly crowd forms nearby. Heed all advice of security personnel. Monitor trusted local media for updates on protests and related disruptions, as organizers may not announce them in advance.
