Bangladesh: Local elections to take place in four phases nationwide through June 5

Local elections to take place in four phases across Bangladesh through June 5. Increased security measures likely; violence possible.

Warning

Bangladesh will hold local elections across 152 sub-districts through June 5. Campaigning will begin April 23, and voting will take place 08:00-16:00 in four phases: May 8, 23, 29, and June 5. Campaign events, including rallies and parades, are likely in the run-up to the vote. Hundreds of people could attend campaign events, especially those hosted by candidates from the incumbent Awami League (AL) and the main opposition Bangladesh National Party (BNP).

Authorities will likely deploy additional security personnel to maintain law and order in locations where elections occur as a precaution. Political violence has typically spiked in the run-up to, during, and after elections. Minor bombings, shootings, acts of intimidation, and attacks on political party offices, candidates, and supporters could occur at locations nationwide. Clashes between rival political factions, various party supporters, and police are possible during the polls, especially near election centers. Authorities may establish roadblocks near polling stations, leading to localized transport disruptions.

Protests are possible ahead of and after the elections. Opposition parties like BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami are boycotting the polls due to alleged concerns over the election process. Demonstrations related to the boycott and in response to perceived irregularities could occur. Potential gathering locations include political party offices, public squares, major intersections, and press clubs. Localized business and traffic disruptions will probably occur near rally sites.

Prepare for increased security measures - potentially including roadblocks and identification checks - in Bangladesh until the end of the sub-district election, especially on polling days. Avoid political party offices, political rallies, polling stations, and government buildings, where political unrest is most likely to occur. If a large mob begins forming, immediately leave the area or seek shelter in a secure, nongovernment building. Allow additional time for travel near election events.
