Bangladesh: Reduced internet speeds ongoing nationwide as of April 21

Decreased internet bandwidth ongoing in Bangladesh as of April 21 due to damaged undersea cable. Speed reductions likely.

Informational

Reduced internet speeds will likely continue across Bangladesh as of April 21 until operators repair a broken submarine cable. Bangladesh Submarine Cables PLC (BSCPLC) confirmed that service disruptions reported since early the previous day were due to damage to submarine cable SEA-ME-WE 5, the largest supplier of international bandwidth to the country. Authorities estimate regular internet services will resume after they complete repair works in around three days.

Commercial disruptions are possible, especially if operations rely heavily on internet access. Communication and security systems dependent on internet connectivity may also be affected. Interruptions to online services by private and government entities, including app-based transport booking and food delivery, are possible. Processing delays may occur at airports, including Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC).

Plan for possible communication and business disruptions. Consider alternative modes of communication, such as satellite connections, for critical business operations. Confirm the working status of security systems; account for possible transport and service delays.
