Authorities to defuse WWII-era bomb in southwestern Berlin, Germany, April 4. Evacuations, transport, and business disruptions likely.

Warning

Authorities plan to defuse a WWII-era bomb in the Schmargendorf neighborhood on Berlin's southwestern side early April 4. The device is located at a construction site on Mecklenburgische Strasse. Police will cordon off and evacuate a 500-meter (550-yard) radius around the bomb's location. Authorities report that about 6,700 people reside within the evacuation zone. Police have instructed local residents to leave the evacuation area no later than 09:30 April 4. It remains unclear how long the disposal operation will take.

Authorities will close several nearby roads completely or partially, including sections of the A-100, during the operation, resulting in localized transport disruptions. Changes to public transport schedules are likely. Heightened security is almost certain until the end of the operation.

Avoid the affected area on April 4 until authorities give the all-clear. Check for transport disruptions before beginning journeys and allow extra time for travel. Heed instructions from local security personnel.
