Netherlands: Climate activists associated with Extinction Rebellion plan roadblock protests in The Hague, Apri 6

Extinction Rebellion climate activists plan roadblock protests on A12 motorway, The Hague, Netherlands, 12:00 April 6; disruptions likely.

Informational

The environmental activist group Extinction Rebellion (XR) plan to stage roadblock protests on the A12 motorway in The Hague, from 12:00 April 6. Organizers are demanding an end to fossil fuel subsidies. Protesters plan to gather in separate locations in the city and then conduct slow-walking demonstrations along different routes. The activists will then converge on the Utrechtsebaan, the section of the A12 highway adjacent to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy. XR protesters staged multiple demonstrations at this location through 2023 and early 2024; it is likely that several hundred to a few thousand demonstrators will participate, based on previous events.

Additional police will likely deploy to monitor all actions. Associated crowd control measures, including road closures and movement restrictions, will likely lead to localized transport disruptions. Separate protest actions are possible throughout the city, including targeting fossil fuel-related businesses.

Avoid any demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Check public transport schedules and local traffic conditions for disruptions before beginning journeys in The Hague in the coming days; allow extra time to reach destinations in protest-affected areas. Leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation.
