Netherlands: Climate activists plan to demonstrate at Groningen Airport Eelde on April 20

Extinction Rebellion climate activists to protests at Groningen Airport Eelde in Netherlands 12:00-15:00 April 20; disruptions likely.

Informational

The environmental activist group Extinction Rebellion (XR) plans to protest at Groningen Airport Eelde (GRQ) from 12:00-15:00 on April 20 to demand the airport's closure and an end to fossil fuel subsidies, among other things. It is unclear how many people will participate or what action the group will take; however, based on previous events, activists will likely attempt to disrupt operations at GRQ; several hundred demonstrators may participate.

Police will likely be deployed to monitor the protest and remove disruptive activists. Associated crowd control measures, including road closures and movement restrictions, will likely lead to localized transport disruptions.

Avoid the demonstration as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Check local traffic conditions for disruptions and allow extra time to reach GRQ. Leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation.
