Netherlands: Environmental activists to demonstrate in Amsterdam April 27
Climte activists to block A10 highway near Amstelveenseweg Street in Amsterdam, Netherlands, from 12:00 April 27. Disruptions likely.
Environmental activists affiliated with Extinction Rebellion (XR) plan to conduct a protest blockade on the A10 roadway near Amstelveenseweg Street in Amsterdam from 12:00 April 27 to denounce the fossil fuel industry. Organizers say they will consider calling off the planned blockade if Dutch King Willem-Alexander denounces fossil fuel financing. It is unclear how many participants may attend; however, A March 30 XR protest on the A10 drew several hundred participants. Previous Extinction Rebellion protests on the A10 took place despite not receiving permission from local authorities; likewise, the April 27 demonstration will likely proceed even if authorities deny the event permission.
Heightened security and transport disruptions are likely near the protest site. Police officers may intervene to reopen traffic on the highway. Confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the protest area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the protest site. Consider alternative routes to avoid southern sections of the A10 in the late morning and afternoon of April 27. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
Extinction Rebellion has blocked or attempted to block the A10 several times since December 2023. Demonstrations in late December and late February saw 400 and 300 participants arrested respectively. However, police intervened during a protest on March 30 to remove parked cars that the organizers were using to block the highway; the several hundred demonstrators who had gathered to march on the highway dispersed shortly afterwards.
