Netherlands: Transport disruptions ongoing across the country due to severe weather April 15
Flight and rail disruptions ongoing across the Netherlands due to severe weather April 15. Lingering disruptions likely through April 16.
Disruptions to key air and ground transport networks are ongoing across parts of the Netherlands April 15. Strong winds accompanied by occasional thunderstorms, hail, and lightning are impacting much of the country. The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) has issued yellow strong wind warnings (the lowest level on a three-tier scale) across the country through 17:00 April 15, with the warnings persisting in western coastal regions through early April 16. Strong winds may cause property damage or power outages.
Around 180 flights have been canceled and hundreds of others delayed at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) as of the afternoon of April 15 due to the severe weather. It is unclear when flights will normalize, and once they do, lingering disruptions are likely as authorities clear the backlog of flights; further associated disruptions are likely through at least April 16. Rail services have also been disrupted on the high-speed line between Amsterdam Centraal Station and Rotterdam Centraal Station, as well as between Rotterdam and Breda. Reduced services have been reported on several other lines. Even as conditions begin to improve across much of the country from late April 15, service alterations are likely to continue on some lines through April 16.
Monitor local media for updated emergency and weather information. Plan for delays if scheduled to transit AMS April 15-16. Reconfirm the status of flights before travel. Check for alterations to train timetables if utilising rail services. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
