Uganda: Strike, protests over tax grievances possible nationwide through late April

Strike and protests over the goverment's newly introduced tax system possible across Uganda through late April.

Informational

Protest and strike actions are possible nationwide through at least April to denounce a new tax collection system introduced by the government. Since April 16, traders in Kampala and other cities have kept their businesses closed to protest tax grievances. Police forces were deployed in the city center of Kampala on April 16 to prevent protests. Prominent unions, civil society groups, and opposition members such as Kizza Besigye and Robert Kyagulanyi (also known as Bobi Wine) have expressed their support for the traders.

In the event of further strike actions, transport and business disruptions are possible, but public services should not be affected. A heightened security presence will likely meet organized or spontaneous protests, elevating the potential for clashes with security forces.

Plan for disruptions to businesses and private transport services. Avoid all demonstrations. Leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Heed the instructions of local authorities.
