Uganda: Tax-related strike by traders suspended as of April 21 /update 1

Strike by traders over newly introduced tax system in Uganda suspended as of April 21.

Informational

A trader strike was suspended on April 20 after consultations with President Yoweri Museveni. Traders led by the Federation of Uganda Traders Association and Kampala City Traders Association launched the strike in mid-April to denounce a new tax collection system introduced by the government. Further negotiations over the controversial changes to the tax system are scheduled for May 7.

The strike could be renewed by traders should negotiations with the government fail. Should the strike resume, associated protests are possible.

Monitor local developments. Prepare for a possible resumption of the strike.
