Argentina: Labor union to hold protest in Buenos Aires May 16 /update 1

Labor union plan to stage protest in Buenos Aires, Argentina, May 16. Tight security, disruptions likely.

Warning

Unionized workers affiliated with the State Workers Association (Asociacion Trabajadores del Estado, ATE) plan to hold a protest in Buenos Aires May 16. The purpose of the demonstration is to protest the policies of President Javier Milei's administration, including recent public sector layoffs, wage freezes, and proposed privatization of public companies. Protesters plan to gather at the National Labor Secretariat in Buenos Aires, starting at 12:00 before marching to the headquarters of Techint. Hundreds could participate in the protest.

Smaller demonstrations are possible in other cities throughout Argentina, particularly near government buildings or public squares, but have not been confirmed. Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near demonstrations; clashes are possible. Companies with ATE-affiliated workers will probably face increased absenteeism, resulting in business disruptions.

Avoid the demonstration as a precaution. Plan for business and localized transport disruptions. If clashes occur, immediately take shelter in a secure, nongovernment building. Heed instructions from authorities.
