Argentina: Labor unions to stage nationwide 24-hour general strike May 16 with demonstration in Buenos Aires
Labor unions to stage 24-hour general strike across Argentina and demonstrate in Buenos Aires May 16. Tight security, disruptions likely.
Unionized workers affiliated with the State Workers Association (Asociacion Trabajadores del Estado, ATE) plan to hold a nationwide general strike May 16. The purpose of the industrial action is to protest the policies of President Javier Milei's administration, including recent public sector layoffs, wage freezes, and proposed privatization of public companies. Protesters plan to hold a demonstration march in Buenos Aires at 12:00 the same day; they will gather at the National Labor Secretariat in Buenos Aires before marching to the headquarters of Techint. Hundreds could participate in the protest.
Smaller demonstrations are possible in other cities throughout Argentina, particularly near government buildings or public squares. Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near demonstrations; clashes are possible. Companies with ATE-affiliated workers will probably face increased absenteeism, resulting in business disruptions.
Avoid demonstrations as a precaution. If clashes occur, immediately take shelter in a secure, nongovernment building. Heed the directives of authorities. Plan for business and localized transport disruptions.
