Argentina: Unionized education workers to stage protests in multiple cities May 22 and 24-hour strike May 23

Unionized education workers to stage protests across Argentina May 22, hold 24-hour strike May 23; significant transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Unionized education workers affiliated with several organizations, including the National Universities' Union Front (Frente Sindical de Universidades Nacionales), plan to hold protests across Argentina on May 22 as well as a 24-hour strike on May 23. The purpose of the actions is to demand higher salaries for education workers and additional funding for educational institutions.

The following are among the locations where education workers intend to demonstrate on May 22:

  • La Plata: March from Plaza Italia to Universidad Nacional de La Plata's campus, 17:00

  • Rosario: Rally at the Engineering School of the Universidad Nacional de Rosario, 17:00, and associated march on unspecified route

  • Neuquen: Rally at Universidad Nacional del Comahue, 18:30, and associated march on unspecified route

On May 23, a related demonstration is scheduled outside the National Congress in Buenos Aires starting at 13:00.

Major disruptions will almost certainly affect educational institutions across the country May 22-23. Authorities will probably deploy a heightened security presence to the sites of any related demonstrations, particularly those near government buildings and on major thoroughfares. Significant transport disruptions are likely in areas that are subject to protest activity, especially in major cities. Protest-related business disruptions are also possible in some areas. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.

Avoid all protest activity as a precaution. Plan for delays, and consider taking alternative routes to circumvent demonstrations and any related disruptions if operating in major cities in Argentina May 22-23. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
